A NOTE FROM THE CHARITY

What We Do

PROTECTING SEA TURTLES AND THEIR HABITATS IN THE INDIAN OCEAN

The Olive Ridley Project was founded in 2013 by Biologist Martin Stelfox in response to the large amounts of entangled olive ridley sea turtles he encountered in the Maldives: He wanted to understand the phenomenon of olive ridley sea turtles drifting into the Maldives entangled in ghost nets and identify where the ghost nets originate from.

Since then, Olive Ridley Project volunteers have removed more than 1400 ghost nets and recorded 812 trapped turtles: olive ridleys make up 89% of the trapped turtles recorded. (Numbers accurate as of July 2019.)

In February 2017 we opened our Marine Turtle Rescue Centre in partnership with Coco Collection in Baa Atoll, Maldives. The first fully-equipped marine turtle rescue centre in Maldives has laboratory, x-ray, ultrasound and full surgical facilities, as well as a full-time resident turtle veterinarian. The Rescue Centre can accommodate up to eight turtle patients at the time.

In the first two and a half years of operation we treated 101 turtles, out of which 49 were successfully released back into the sea.

The Olive Ridley Project is a small charity, depending on volunteers for much of our work. However, we are steadily growing and we expanded into Kenya in November 2018 and Oman in January 2019. Meet the passionate ORP team in the field and behind the scenes here.

Olive Ridley Project is a UK based Charitable Incorporated Organisation, registered Charity No. 1165905, registered in England & Wales.
